COLLEGE/CAREER SCHOLARSHIP FOR SENIORS – The MCRMF is a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring the life and memory of Los Angeles County Sherriff Deputy Maria Cecilia Rosa. Four $1,000-2,500 scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors planning to attend college. Seniors can download an application from www.mcrmf.org Applications must be postmarked January 29, 2010. (Bryan) SCHOLARSHIP FOR SENIORS – The Asian Pacific Islanders for Professional and Community Advancement (APCA) is seeking qualified applicants for its 2010 National APCA Scholarship Program. Seniors with a minimum GPA of 2.75, of any ethnic or cultural background who are United States Citizens or legal residents are welcome to apply. The application package can be downloaded from http://www.apca-att.org. Completed applications must be submitted in PDF format to APCA@att.com by March 1, 2010 5PM PST. Non-PDF formatted documents will not be accepted. (Bryan) FINANCIAL AID – Now is the time to apply for financial aid. Seniors can submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Questions about how to fill out the FAFSA can be directed to Ms. Bryan via email at collegecoun@aol.com. There will be workshops to help students submit the FAFSA in the College Center at 6pm on February 11, 18, and 25. Students can also attend a Cash for College workshop for help (Bryan) CAL GRANT – It’s not too late to turn in your Cal Grant GPA Verification form. Seniors with a GPA of 2.0 or above that meet the income eligibility are entitled to a Cal Grant worth up to $9,700. The Cal Grant form can be obtained in the College Center or downloaded from www.calgrants.org. Once you fill out the form drop it in the white box on the table in the College Center. (Bryan) FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOPS – Cash for College workshops are available to help students fill out the FAFSA and Cal Grant forms for free. Financial aid experts will be at the following locations to assist you and your parents with completing these forms: January 30th at Helen Bernstein HS (9am-2pm), January 30th at Hollywood High School (9am-2pm), and February 20th at LACC (9am-1pm). Participants are also eligible to receive a $1,000 scholarship for attending. For more info visit www.calgrants.org. (Bryan) SCHOLARSHIP FOR JUNIORS – Discover Card Financial Services is awarding up to 10 scholarships of $40,000 each to current juniors with at least a 2.75 GPA. Qualified applicants will have demonstrated accomplishments in community service and leadership and faced a significant roadblock or challenge. Apply online at http://www.discoverfinancial.com/community/scholarships.html. Who is eligible to apply? Any current high school junior who has at least a 2.75 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale for 9th and 10th grades. How many scholarships are available? Up to 10 scholarships of $40,000 each. (Bryan) LACC EVIDENCE SPECIALIST CLASS AT MARSHALL – EARN 3 COLLEGE CREDITS – Sign up now for the next LACC Evidence Specialist – AJ180 Introduction to Forensics. Class begins February 8 and meets Thursday afternoons in Room 353. Applications are available in the GEAR UP Green Room Office. (Reisman) STUDENTS * START A HEALTHY NEW YEAR AT THE JMHS HEALTH CENTER – Come to the JMHS Health Center on the Teacher’s Parking Lot for physicals, sports physicals, check-ups, meet with a registered dietician, counseling, immunizations and confidential family planning services. (Lam) * GET PAID TO BE A PEER LEADER – The JMHS Health Center/Asian Pacific Health Care Venture is recruiting for the Student Advisory Board and the Teen Pregnancy Prevention and Life Skills Peer Leader Program. Gain experience in health care, advocacy, presentation skills and have fun and get paid doing it! There will be an info session on Wednesday, January 27 during lunch at the JMHS Health Center. (Lam) MARSHALL VOCAL PRO IS BACK! – If you or your friend can sing/perform, don’t miss the auditions! Auditions are during lunch on January 26-29. Have 2 songs memorized and with CD or instrumental accompaniment. Both must be under 3 minutes long (second verse, chorus, bridge + chorus). (Lee, S.) USC BLOOD DRIVE – USC Blood Center will be holding a drive on Tuesday, January 26, from 2pm-8pm on the basketball courts. Anyone interested should sign up in Mrs. Lee-Ramirez’s office or during lunch with the Center’s representative. Students must be at least 16 years old and have a signed consent form. All participants will receive either a USC t-shirt or a coupon from Baskin Robbins! Show you care, give a little blood. Thank you! (Lee-Ramirez) FREE R.O.E. AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM – We are up and running Tuesday through Friday from 3:15pm-6pm. Join our Enrichment classes, athletic classes and sports club free! Any JMHS student is free to join. (Sandoval) FREE R.O.E. ELECTRIC GUITAR CLASS – Start the New Year by learning to play the Electric guitar. Class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4pm-6pm. Guitars and amplifiers are provided! See you there! (Sandoval) TUTORING IS NOW OPEN! – Come and receive help in Math, Science, English, and Spanish every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:30pm-5:30pm in Rooms 723 and 725. (Nagaishi, K.) SATURDAY SCHOOL SESSION 4B – Saturday School Session 4B (9th and 10th grade only) will begin Saturday, January 9-January 30. We will meet Saturdays (January 9, 16, 23 and 30) as well as Wednesdays and Thursdays (January 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 and 28).
